How to Host a Christmas Trivia Night: A Step-by-Step Holiday Party Guide
Christmas trivia fits a holiday party, an office get-together, or Christmas Eve with family. Start after food is served so people can snack while they play. This guide walks you through everything you need to run it smoothly, whether you write your own questions or use a ready-made pack.
What you need
- A host (one person reads questions and keeps score; the host does not play).
- Pens and a sheet of paper per team, or printed answer sheets.
- A TV, laptop or tablet if you want to show questions on screen (optional). TV host mode shows questions in very large type and works with arrow keys or a presentation clicker.
- About 80 questions split into 8 themed rounds of 10, plus one tiebreaker.
Setting up teams
Teams of 2 to 6 work best. With 8 to 12 guests, make 3 teams; with 15 or more, make 4 or 5. Mix ages and seat teammates together so they can whisper answers. Have each team choose a name and write it at the top of their sheet.
Timing the night
- Read each question twice, then give about 30 to 45 seconds to answer.
- A 10-question round takes roughly 8 to 10 minutes including marking.
- Take a short break after round 4 for food, drinks and a scores update.
- Plan on about 90 minutes for all 8 rounds; drop a round or two if you need a shorter game.
Scoring
Give 1 point per correct answer. Teams swap sheets to mark each other, or the host marks them. Decide up front how strict to be on spelling and close answers, and announce running totals after each round to keep things competitive. If teams are tied at the end, use a numeric tiebreaker question: closest answer wins.
Prize ideas
Prizes do not need to cost much. Try a candy cane bundle, first pick in a gift swap, a homemade ornament, or bragging rights on a printed certificate.
Host tips for Christmas
- For an office party, set teams by mixing departments so people meet someone new.
- Holiday music between rounds keeps the energy up while you collect answer sheets.
- Ask teams to pick a festive team name at the start; it gets people talking right away.
- Read questions slowly and clearly, and never reveal answers until the round is marked.
